Nonprofits collaborate to feed and empower youth

A partnership between Whidbey Island Nourishes (WIN) and the South Whidbey Commons feeds young people and empowers them to support themselves through job training. For nearly five years, hungry youth and adults have benefitted from free meals and healthy snacks that WIN volunteers have prepared and placed in a refrigerator located behind the South Whidbey Commons Coffeehouse Bookstore. Meanwhile, inside the building, students and adults have participated in a workplace training program that makes them better candidates for further education or employment elsewhere. The two organizations have supported each other’s work in the past and recently combined their efforts to...

The Harvest Gala

Our first ever dinner-auction exceeded everyone’s expectations. Love for each other, our community, and the Commons was palpable in the room the evening of October 29, and those in attendance put legs on that love. The event raised more than $35,000–half the donations we rely on to continue bringing you the programs that you enjoy. In fact, it was so successful that we plan to have another Harvest Gala in 2012. Mark your calendar now for the evening of October 27. See you there!

Summer FunFest was a hit!

The South Whidbey Commons’ first Summer FunFest was a smashing success thanks to perfect weather, enthusiastic attendees, fun activities, and delicious food. Members of the community enjoyed painting mugs and bowls for later use in the Coffeehouse Bookstore, blowing bubbles, creating chalk art on the sidewalk, playing with Legos®, collaborating on interactive community poetry, creating “There’s no place like South Whidbey” masterpieces, and dressing up for photos. Photographers took pictures for the “Capture the Face of South Whidbey photo contest, artists captured it all in watercolors, and people of all ages enjoyed (and hula hooped to)...

It’s AmeriCorps week

The South Whidbey Commons Coffeehouse Bookstore would grind to a halt without the help of our two full-time AmeriCorps members Darcie Noonan (right) and Tracie Fowler (left). They provide leadership, train volunteers and keep the coffeehouse running smoothly. Here are some reflections on the time they’ve spent at the South Whidbey Commons: Darcy’s reflections I get asked often, “Why do you serve in the AmeriCorps?” as if being a member was a conscious choice and to some extent it is: I applied to the program and meet all the required terms of service. Personally, however, it just seems as if it was something that fit, something that met what I was...
