Backroom

Volunteers sew for the Little Dresses for Africa program

The South Whidbey Commons’ “Backroom” is a dedicated community space that’s part of the Coffeehouse Bookstore. It can accommodate up to 30 people and has a screen for presentations, as well as tables for activities. The Backroom is also used as overflow seating for the Coffeehouse Bookstore when it’s not booked.

The Commons strives to make this space as affordable as possible, while still ensuring  sustainability. Four use categories reflect the Commons’ reservation priorities and clarify the fee structure.

Book the Backroom

Want to reserve the Backroom? Fill out a backroom request form. The Commons staff books the backroom based on the following criteria:

First priority

Programs that are designed and offered by SWC volunteers, in line with the SWC mission (for example, Café Español).

Cost: The Commons offers the space and utilities as a service to the community, but donations and encouraging attendees to purchase food and beverages helps offset the expense of providing the space.

Second priority

Programming that complements the mission of the SWC and that is offered at no charge to the community (for example a babysitting first aid class for teens or a Transition Whidbey film series).

Cost: The Commons offers the space and utilities as a service to the community, but donations and encouraging attendees to purchase food and beverages helps offset the expense of providing the space.

Third priority

Programming that complements the mission of the SWC, but is closed to the public or offered at a fee to the community (for example, the Tilth Gardening Series or Edward Jones Investment Group).

Cost: $10 for the first hour and $5 for each hour thereafter. This doesn’t fully cover the expense of the space, so please encourage attendees to purchase food and beverages to help offset the cost.

Fourth priority

Programming that may not complement, but does not conflict with the mission of the SWC.

Cost: $20 for the first hour and $10 for each hour thereafter. This doesn’t fully cover the expense of the space, so please encourage attendees to purchase food and beverages to help offset the cost.
